U.S. Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance says 'cat lady' comment was sarcasm and people 'took it the wrong way
Donald Trump's running mate in the 2017 U.S. presidential election, Senator J.D. Vance, responded to the backlash over his prior comments regarding "childless cat ladies" on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Vance clarified that his 2021 remark was sarcastic and misinterpreted, saying that the only thing he regretted was the way his words were taken.
In the interview, Vance made it clear that his initial goal was to draw attention to the financial obstacles that keep many women from beginning children. He also stated that his administration and Trump's goal is to create more favorable conditions that will support the expansion of families. This justification, meantime, might not satisfy detractors, who include well-known individuals like Oprah Winfrey, who voiced her disapproval of Vance during her speech at the Democratic National Convention.
At first, Vance's remarks were seen as a criticism of prominent Democrats, like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vice President Kamala Harris, citing their lack of children. Vance stuck to his guns when speaking with NBC's Kristen Welker, blaming the DNC and Kamala Harris of distorting his remarks while expressing remorse only for the way the public saw his remarks.
