Shiites have declared war on us - FCT Commissioner of Police says as he mourns slain officers

On Sunday, August 25, tensions erupted in the country's capital when a parade by the outlawed Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as the Shiites, turned violent. This led to the murders of two police officers and a local merchant at the well-known Wuse Market in Abuja.

Benneth Igweh, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, voiced his strong disapproval of the event and emphasized the dire repercussions of the altercation. Igweh called the Shiite group's acts "provocative," particularly the attacks on security personnel that resulted in the critical injuries of two policewomen.

In a press conference held at Force Headquarters, Igweh angrily denounced the acts of violence and promised that under his leadership, he would not allow attacks of this nature on police officers. "Their killers will not go unpunished," Igweh declared, reaffirming his resolve to hold those accountable.

Significant property damage was also caused by the altercation; at least three police cars are said to have caught fire during the commotion. Igweh declared:

“You can see now that these people (Shiites) have killed my men. They even went ahead to injure two policewomen. In fact, they’ve even declared war on security operatives.

“We spoke to their lawyer, if you heard what he was saying, you would be shocked, you would know that these people have declared total war on us. I want to assure you that we won’t take that lightly, this is the last protest or procession they will carry out in FCT.”
