The Notebook' star, Gena Rowlands dies

Actress Gena Rowlands, who was nominated for an Oscar and was most renowned for her work on a number of films with her husband, director John Cassavetes, has away at the age of 94.

On August 14, a Wednesday, her son Nick Cassavetes made the announcement.

Nick disclosed that she had Alzheimer's in 2024.

Both before and after her films with Cassavetes, Gena enjoyed success as an actor. But the body of work she created with her actor spouse who became a director ultimately came to define her career.

In addition to Faces (1968), Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Opening Night (1977), Gloria (1980), and Love Streams (1984), Rowlands portrayed a number of ground-breaking characters.

For the 1974 film "A Woman Under the Influence," in which she portrayed a mother and wife breaking under the strain of home harmony, and the 1980 film "Gloria," which tells the story of a woman who helps a small boy escape the mob, Gena was nominated for two Oscars.

Rowlands won three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Daytime Emmy, two Golden Globes, and was nominated for an Oscar. In 2015, she received an honorary Academy Award in appreciation of her contributions to Hollywood and her legacy.

In her son's hit film "The Notebook," Rowlands brought in a new audience with her portrayal of a memory-damaged woman reflecting on a once-in-a-lifetime romance.

In 1996, she also made an appearance in her son Nick Cassavetes' film "Unhook the Stars."

In her later years, Rowlands made several appearances in films and TV, including in “The Skeleton Key” and the detective series “Monk.” Her last appearance in a movie was in 2014, playing a retiree who befriends her gay dance instructor in “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.”
