Police summon NLC President over alleged terrorism

The National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been called in by the Nigeria Police Force to be questioned over serious charges including cybercrime and terrorism financing.

The summons was explained in full in a letter sent out by the Department of Force Intelligence's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team. Ajaero has been linked to a case involving criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felonies, subversion, and cybercrime, according to the letter, which is signed by Adamu S. Muazu.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM, Ajaero must go to the police for an interview at the Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction in Abuja. The letter threatens to have him arrested if he doesn't accept the invitation.

It read;

“This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated. You are therefore required to report to the undersigned for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja, through the Team Leader on telephone no 08035179870, in connection with the above investigation”.

The government's moves have drawn harsh criticism from the NLC, which charges it with launching an anti-organization campaign. This comes after security forces raided the NLC headquarters recently, claiming to be in the process of apprehending a suspect in international terrorism. But the NLC has rejected this explanation as a cover-up, pointing out contradictions in the police story.

NLC officials denounced the raid and called for the government to apologize, the return of confiscated goods, and the release of all imprisoned people at a news conference last Thursday in Abuja.
