Police shut down church in Abuja after members engaged in a free for all fight
On Sunday, August 18, a serious fight broke out among the congregation at the United Methodist Church in the Durumi neighborhood of the Federal Capital Territory, abruptly ending church services.
According to Punch, the altercation lasted for hours, caused damage to some of the church's belongings, and needed the intervention of FCT command personnel to put it under control.

The police's first desperate attempts to break up the conflict were unsuccessful until they used tear gas.
More information was obtained indicating that the police had locked down the church, expelled the congregants, and brought several of the elders to the station for questioning.
An unnamed church member recounted the events, expressing disappointment at the dispute and claiming that there had been a split among the church elders over the choice to break away from their US headquarters.
The participant went on to say that the issue started when the church headquarters authorized actions that are not customary in Nigeria.
“Our headquarters is in America and they have legalised some practices that are not part of our culture. Some elders were of the view that we should pull out, and give the church another name. But another set of elders kicked against the move. This created a faction in the church. At a point, they wanted to go to court, but I cannot say why they did not end up going.
Today, while addressing the church during the service, our pastor announced that they would be heading to the court and expressed his wish that the church remain with the headquarters. That was what instigated the fight. I have never seen such a thing before in my life. The fight was so serious that when the police came they did not stop until they fired teargas. Some of the church elders were taken to the station for interrogation after the whole thing. “

Theip FCT command police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed the event and stated that on Monday, August 19, Commissioner of Police Bennett Igweh invited the church leaders to his office.
Adeh said, “The CP has invited all the church elders to come to the command by 10 am tomorrow.“
