Health ministry mandates all Nigerian-bound travellers to fill health declaration form following outbreak of monkeypox in some African countries
In response to the monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak in certain regions of Africa, the Ministry of Health has issued a new regulation requiring all travelers entering Nigeria to complete and submit a health declaration form.
The policy, which aims to stop the disease's spread, is currently in place for travelers landing at the airports in Lagos and Abuja.
Visitors have the option to complete the form online or print a printed copy to fill it by hand. To prevent delays upon arrival in Nigeria, the ministry highly advises all travelers to complete the form online before to leaving their current location.

"The Nigeria Health Declaration Form must be filled out by all incoming passengers to Nigeria. Paper-based versions will be provided on arrival in Nigeria for passengers unable to fill the form," the ministry stated on its website. "This form is an instituted measure to prevent the spread, monitor the possible importation of infectious diseases, and aid the control of disease outbreaks, thereby protecting the health of all Nigerians."
Travelers must fill out a form with personal information, travel, health, and contact history from the 21 days before their arrival in Nigeria.
This action comes after the Africa Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued warnings that, due to the development of a novel form known as Clade Ib, especially in Congo, it may declare a public health emergency of continental security (PHECS) over mpox in the upcoming week. Cases of the novel variation have also been documented in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda since mid-July.
On Thursday, August 8, Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa CDC, announced that recorded cases on the continent have increased by 160% from 2023 to 2024 and by 79% from 2022 to 2023.
