Each Senator earns N1m per month - Revenue Commission says


According to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the monthly salaries and allowances of the 109 senators holding legislative seats in the red chamber amount to ₦1,063,860.


The former Federal Republic senator, Mr. Shehu Sani, recently made a statement in which he reportedly revealed to the public that each senator receives a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million in addition to the monthly ₦750, 000.00 prescribed by the Commission. This revelation prompted RMAFC chairman M. B. Shehu to release a statement.


According to Shehu, the RMAFC lacks the constitutional authority to ensure that MPs' compensation packages are implemented correctly.  

 

“This lacuna is, however, being addressed by the National Assembly,” he said

The commission provided the following breakdown of each senator's pay and benefits: The basic salary is ₦168,866:70; the motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance allowance is ₦126,650:00; the personal assistant is ₦42,216:66; the domestic staff is ₦126,650:00; the entertainment is ₦50,660:00; the utilities are ₦50,660:00; the newspapers/periodicals are ₦25,330:00; the wardrobe is ₦42,216,66:00; the house maintenance is ₦8,443.33:00; and the constituency allowance is ₦422,166:66.

Certain allowances are regular, while others are not, according to the head of the RMAFC.  

 

“Regular allowances are paid regularly with basic salary while non-regular allowances are paid as when due.

 

“For instance, Furniture allowance (₦6,079,200:00) and Severance Gratuity (₦6,079,200:00) are paid once in every tenure and Vehicle allowance (₦8,105,600:00) which is optional is a loan which the beneficiary has to pay before leaving office,” he added.

 

Shehu stated that housing was previously supplied to all public and legislative officers, with the exception of the president, vice president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives.


Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, came under fire from the Senate on Sunday for his assertion that members of the National Assembly (NASS) fix their own pay. In a recent interview, Obasanjo declared that it was "immoral" for federal legislators to choose their own pay and benefits. Rather, he asserted, this duty ought to fall on the RMAFC.

The Senate's spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, responded to Obasanjo's remark by calling on anyone with solid proof to provide the opposite picture and branding any notion that the National Assembly sets its own wages as "uncharitable and satanic."


According to Adaramodu, the red chamber only gets the wage that the RMAFC has allotted to it in accordance with the constitution.
