Disabled man, 22, dies after being left in hot car by caretaker who was working second job


On Tuesday, August 20, 22-year-old special-needs man passed away after his caregiver slipped off to his second job in North Carolina, leaving him in a hot car for hours.

 

According to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, Dontarious Batts was in the care of Rogers Lee Inge Jr., an employee of Universal Health Care. However, the caretaker took him with him to his second work as a janitor at Cleveland High School in Clayton.

When Inge got at the school at 8 a.m. for his shift, he left Batts inside his car with the windows up and the engine running.

 

Two hours later, when the caregiver checked on Batt, Inge informed the police that the 22-year-old was okay.

 

Batts was left inside the car by 55-year-old Inge for over six hours before he was discovered to be unresponsive at 4:17 p.m.

 

With Batt's body still inside the vehicle, he proceeded to drive to a nearby fire station in Clinton while making a 911 call. When officials met Inge at the station, they pronounced Batts deceased.


After being placed under arrest, Inge was accused of involuntary manslaughter.

 

According to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, an autopsy will be performed, but investigators think that Batts' death was caused by the heat inside the vehicle.


Tuesday saw a high of 81 degrees in the region.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that on an 80-degree day, the temperature inside a car can rise to 109 degrees in just 20 minutes and 123 degrees in an hour.


After being transported to the Johnston County jail, Inge was given a $35,000 bond.


His employment at Johnston County Public Schools was terminated.
