'America, I gave my best to you': Biden eyes legacy in emotional farewell
Joe Biden did not intend to deliver this speech. Well, not with these circumstances, not this year.
But this president, whose life has been ravaged by tragedy and misfortune in both his personal and professional spheres, is one person who knows how swiftly things can turn around.
Speaking to a crowded Chicago arena on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, Mr. Biden delivered a passionate defense of his presidency, touching on many of the issues he raised during his campaigns in 2020 and this year. A few weeks after a disastrous debate performance, he withdrew his bid for reelection in mid-July.

"Like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to this nation,” he said, towards the end of a nearly hour-long address punctuated by raucous shouts of "Thank you, Joe".
After being introduced by his wife Jill and daughter Ashley, Mr. Biden entered the stage. Jill informed the crowd that she "saw him dig deep into his soul" as he made the decision to withdraw from the presidential election.
He gave Ashley a hug and then dabbed at his eyes with a tissue.
With a heartfelt gesture, the president straightened up a bit at the podium and grinned broadly while the audience applauded.
While he was clearly considering his position in history, he also took time throughout his speech to extol his vice president, the person he believes will be his successor in the White House.

“Selecting Kamala was the very first decision I made when I became our nominee and it's the best decision I made my whole career,” he said. “She's tough, she's experienced, and she has enormous integrity.”
