Gallant D’Tigress lost 88-74 to USA in q’finals

According to The PUNCH, Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, was eliminated from the 2024 Olympic Games after losing to the United States of America 88-74 in the women's basketball quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Nigeria exited the competition as hoops heroes, but the USA carried on with their relentless pursuit of yet another triumphant title defense.

After surpassing predictions to advance to the round of 16, an accomplishment not shared by any other African team, the Nigerians aimed to secure a spot in the competition's semifinals by eliminating the Americans.

Rena Wakama's team got off to a great start, showing no fear in the face of the Americans, who are vying for a record eighth straight gold medal.

A'ja Wilson put the Americans on the board with an early basket to give the Americans the early advantage.

D'Tigress was prepared to level the playing field right away even though they understood it would take an Athenian effort to defeat the American team, which features eight women who were formerly the first overall choice in the WNBA draft.

Breanna Stewart put an end to the brief drought with a transition layup on a feed from Chelsea Gray, capping a motionless first minute. Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah of Nigeria, though, answered right after with a layup to make it 4–4.

Jackie Young, who took the court first, scored two early baskets to widen the margin, making D'Tigress work to come up the entire time.

D'Tigress will be pleased with their performance in the last quarter, but the game at the Bercy Arena wasn't a rematch of the USA's 56-point victory over Nigeria in February during the qualifications in Belgium.

The African champions, who had lost the first three quarters, turned things around in the fourth quarter, winning 26–12 to win over the hearts of basketball fans throughout Africa and beyond.

D'Tigress has had a significant impact on the basketball community and is returning home.

The American women have won seven consecutive gold medals at the Olympics and nine Olympic Games since 1992.
