Family of 7 die after eating cassava meal in Sokoto

In the Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State's Kajiji District's Runjn Barmo hamlet, a family of seven perished from eating tainted cassava meal.

During a condolence visit with the state's commissioner of health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, and other officials, Muhammadu Modi Magajin Runjin Barmo, the leader of the village, stated that the tragedy occurred on Wednesday, August 7.

According to Barmo, the victims cooked the tainted cassava for supper.

He said: “The victims comprised of the father, Malam Abubakar, his wife, A’ishatu Abubakar as well as their five children died after they ate the foods”.

He continued by saying that even though they passed away after the meal, it is unknown if the food had a direct role in their demise.

He explained that this is because, although the village's five houses have utilized cassava, no deaths have been reported as of yet.

Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, the state commissioner for health, responded by saying that they were in the hamlet determining the incident's cause so that the governor could be notified and take appropriate action.

Hajiya Balarabe stated that she received the incident report in writing on Saturday, August 10. As a result, she promptly assembled a delegation from the ministry's Surveillance Disease Control Unit and all of the Directors to evaluate the issue.

In order to verify whether the victims' deaths were caused by the meal, the Commissioner went on to say that the ministry would collect samples from one youngster who just so happened to remain alive after consuming the allegedly tainted cassava dish.
